What a Permanent Lighting Install Day Actually Looks Like in Walton, KY

Installer on a ladder fastening permanent lighting track along the fascia of a white brick home with black shutters in Walton, KY

Short Answer: A permanent lighting install on a two-story home in Walton, KY took our crew about four hours, cleanup included. On this JellyFish job, the controller went in first, a tester cord checked the lights as they went up, cords ran to the roof at the same time, and about 160 feet of track was mounted corner to corner. From the homeowner’s first call to install day was about four weeks.

Our most recent permanent lighting install on the Kentucky side was a JellyFish job in Walton. It’s a good one to walk through, because most of what people know about install day comes from a quote and a few photos, not from watching a crew work a house.

If you’ve been looking into permanent LED lighting in Walton, Florence, or Union, here’s how the day went, in the order it happened.

The House

This one is a two-story with a brick front, vinyl siding on the sides, and about 160 feet of roofline across the front eaves and gables. The fascia runs straight and clean, which is exactly what a permanent track wants. It’s the same reason the track fits so well on homes up the road in Florence and Independence.

The track itself is white, matched to the trim. In the daytime photos you’d have to know where to look to find it.

The other reason this homeowner called is the calendar. By fall the evenings are already short, and nobody in Northern Kentucky wants to be on a ladder in January pulling lights back down. For most people, permanent holiday lighting in Northern Kentucky is really about ending that cycle for good.

How the Four Weeks Broke Down

Install day is the part people picture, but it’s the last step. From the homeowner’s first call to lights on the house was about four weeks, and most of that time is spent getting the system ready for one specific roofline.

When What happens
Week 1 First call and free design consult.
Week 2 Quote approved, 30% down, lights ordered the same day
1-2 weeks after approval Color-matched track arrives
2-3 weeks after approval Install day

The consult is where the design gets settled: which lines of the house get lit, what color the track needs to be to disappear into the trim, and where the controller and power can sensibly live. Once the quote is approved, the order goes in that day. Nothing is pulled off a shelf, because the track is ordered for this house and nobody else’s. By the time the crew pulls into the driveway, every foot of it has already been planned.

Install Day, In Order

If you want the bigger picture on how the track, LEDs, and wiring work, we covered that in how permanent outdoor lighting is installed on Cincinnati homes. This is what it looked like on one real house.

1. The controller goes in first

Before any lights go up, the crew installs the controller where it’s going to live. On most homes that’s the garage or a similar spot that’s tucked away, close to the lights, and close to where the cord can run up to the roof. Every run on the house routes back to that one point, so it gets settled before anything else.

2. A tester cord goes on

Next comes what our crew calls a tester cord. It’s there to test the lights as they go up, so each section gets checked while it’s being installed instead of all at once at the end.

3. Cords run to the roof at the same time

While the lights were being tested, the rest of the crew ran the cords up to the roof. On a two-story, doing those two jobs side by side instead of one after the other is a big part of why the day stays short.

4. Track and lights go up corner to corner

Then the track went up along the roofline, corner to corner, with the LEDs set into it and pressed tight under the fascia. Before the crew leaves, every zone gets tested and the homeowner gets set up in the app. That’s how every install we do as an authorized JellyFish dealer wraps up.

Four Techs, Three of Them New, Four Hours

This Walton install had a crew of four, and three of them were new. They finished in about four hours, cleanup included.

That’s the part we’re proudest of. Joey, our JellyFish guy on the Cincinnati crew, had three people on their first permanent installs, and the order held: controller, tester cord, cords up, track on. When a process works with new hands on it, it’ll work on the next house too, and there are several more on the schedule this fall.

Then the Lights Came On

This is the part the homeowner cared about, and he loved it. What sold him wasn’t one look. It was how much he could change it.

He’s already run the house through just about everything:

  • Purple and green to match the Halloween decorations in the yard.
  • Red, white, and blue across every gable.
  • A full multicolor run.
  • Cool blues and purples.
  • Plain warm white for an ordinary night.

It’s the same 160 feet of track every time, switched from his phone.

“Amazing! Clean look and bright warm glow make these stand out! Not to mention the smoothness of the patterns!”

Same Lights, Different Experience

These were JellyFish lights, and if you’ve been shopping for a JellyFish lighting installer around Cincinnati, you’ve probably noticed more than one company offers them. When the product is the same, the product isn’t what you’re comparing. The installer is, and so are the quote and the timeline.

A few questions worth asking anyone, and how they played out on this Walton job:

  • Who’s actually on the roof? Our own crew of four, following the same order every install follows.
  • Where will the controller go? It was installed first, before a single light went up.
  • How are the lights tested? With a tester cord, section by section as they went up, not after the roofline was finished.
  • How long from first call to install day? On this job, about four weeks.

Getting on This Season’s Schedule

That four weeks is worth planning around. Several permanent installs are already on the books in the Cincinnati area this season, and the calendar fills from the front. If you want your lights on before the holidays, we broke the dates down in Permanent Lights by Thanksgiving in Cincinnati.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install permanent lights in Walton, KY?

Yes. Walton is part of our Northern Kentucky service area, along with Florence, Union, Independence, and the river cities. This post is from a job we just finished there.

How long does a permanent lighting install take on a two-story home?

This one took about four hours with a crew of four, cleanup included, for about 160 feet of roofline. Larger homes or more complicated rooflines take longer, but most homes are done in a single visit.

Can I change the colors and schedule myself?

Yes. Everything runs from an app on your phone. You can pick colors, run patterns, and set the lights to come on and go off at whatever hours you want. The Walton homeowner had already cycled through Halloween, patriotic, multicolor, and everyday warm white within the first few weeks.

Will permanent lights hold up to a Northern Kentucky winter?

A properly installed track does. It’s fastened along the fascia, the same edge your gutters already hang from through every snow and freeze. That’s also the point of going permanent here: nobody has to be on the roof between November and March.

Can you tell the lights are there during the day?

Not easily. The track is color-matched to the trim, and on this house it’s white on white. From the street it reads as part of the roofline.
